Got a beef about biking? Tell someone who cares!

Cycling is a great way to get around. It is a healthy, active form of exercise, costs nothing and means that you dont get stuck in traffic It is for exactly these reasons that we are working to make Auckland City a place where it is safe and easy to get around by bike.

In order to achieve this, Auckland City has a cycling and walking strategy, which aims to develop cycleway and walkway routes across the city and encourage their use. An overview of the 1998 strategy is online along with the 2007 draft walking and cycling framework.

According to the Herald this morning our leaders are considering an additional tax on petrol…

Motorists face paying more for petrol through regional fuel taxes, levied to pay for local transport projects including the electrification of Auckland’s suburban trains.

For more roads? Are they insane? What about climate change? What about peak oil? I say whack another dollar on per litre and use it for upgrading the trains and busses - not for encouraging our crazy addiction to cars.

Check it out - part III of Michael Tritt’s brilliant documentary series on Auckland’s transportation woes. Just in time for the local body elections.

Just came across this article about some blokes making bio diesel from algae that grows on human poo!

The bio diesel, made from wild algae grown on human sewage

In terms of climate change bio diesel is no silver bullet by any means. Transport does contribute a great deal towards greenhouse gasses - so low emission fuel would be a good step in the right direction as long as it doesn’t involve clearing large tracts of land for more dodgy mono-cropping of canola.

Who knows though - maybe poo algae is the answer!

I haven’t seen these in NZ before - but I want one! A fully plug in electric moped - and in retro too.

Less than 1 cent per km at 18 cent per kw/hr. Just switch over to clean energy with the clean energy guide and you’re laughing.
