Dirty old Fonterra!

Fonterra

The giant NZ dairy cooperative Fonterra have been exposed by a Greenpeace investigation as being responsible for destruction of rain-forests in Indonesia and Malaysia. Their intensive industrial dairy model requires NZ farmers to use supplemental feed - in this case palm kernels grown on land where up until very recently was pristine rain-forest inhabited by the endangered Sumatran tiger and orangutan. The palm kernel is imported into NZ by a company called RD1 which are half owned by you guessed it - Fonterra! This is so wrong on so many levels.

I think it is amazing how such a large company can come from such a little country. In saying that, they should clean up their act and try and become more environmentally friendly (if they havn’t already). Foreigners view NZ as being a clean and green country and If Fonterra is indeed destroying rainforests then they are tarnishing our clean and green image.
