Bottom trawling ban maybe not all it seems

by nick on April 4, 2007

Jim Anderton has just announced that Bottom trawling and dredging will be banned from banned from 32% of our Exclusive Economic Zone.

Sounds good but when the original proposal by the fishing industry (who we know are very responsible and sensitive to ocean ecology) came out it turned out to be a bit of a con.

Bottom trawling closure mapThis map shows the difference between the areas that the industry propose to close and where they actually do their bottom trawling. Hmmm.

The devil is in the detail was the Greenpeace response to the proposal in Feb 2006 … I wonder whether Jimbo has made any substantial improvements.
